SMPL 4-20mA Input Interface

Some sensors, especially in the industrial world, use a current output instead of a voltage output. Why? Well, it makes sending the signal over very long wires without worrying about voltage drop easy! The problem is that your data acquisition device probably doesn’t have a current input. We need to take that varying current signal from the transducer and turn it into a voltage signal that is in the measurement range of your DAQ. The 4-20mA input interface does exactly that, with variable offset and gain controls to match any 4-20mA transducer to most DAQ devices on the market.

While current output transducers are not as common in research laboratory settings and voltage output, sometimes they are all that is available. They could even be necessary if your monitored variable is far away. Often we see this on systems with hydraulics where the hydraulic pump is remote and potentially many floors away. The fact that these sensors “zero” output is 4mA also means that it is easy to detect a broken wire, because then it will read as 0mA!
