We are excited to announce that registration for the 2023 GEARS (Generalist Electromechanics for Applied Researchers) Workshop is now open! Summer is approaching, and we can’t wait to welcome a new group of students to our summer workshop class. After the success of last year’s workshop, we can’t wait to help a new group of students learn about and build their own scientific instrument creations!
The first workshop in 2021 was a groundbreaking endeavor, providing hands-on technical training to graduate-level students in non-engineering fields. We recognized the need to equip scientists with essential technical skills, as the reliance on outdated equipment and external support staff was hindering their research progress. The GEARS workshops aim to bridge this gap by imparting basic technical skills and knowledge to scientists. While we cannot transform students into experts in just a week, we can introduce them to various tools, common issues, and skills that will benefit their research journeys.

The workshop consists of lectures, hands on activities, facility tours, and a group project where students team up to tackle a measurement challenge together with experts to help guide the way. By grouping students into small teams, we can tackle more complex projects and foster collaboration among participants. Students not only gain technical skills but also develop essential soft skills required for teamwork and problem-solving.

If you want to see more of what goes on at the GEARS workshops, checkout our blog posts summarizing the 2021 and 2022 workshops. You can also get information on the workshop logistics from the workshop webpage. Registration closes on July 7th, but we expect to be sold out before then and will take the registration form offline when we reach capacity. Keeping each cohort small ensures you get the most attention from the workshop staff and makes for tight knit groups of students.
To register for the 2023 GEARS Workshop, please complete the registration form. We encourage you to secure your spot early! If you have any questions or require further information, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to welcoming you to the GEARS Workshop (in our new and larger facility)!
