One of the most crucial aspects for any shop, lab, industrial maintenance area, or even a hobbyist’s workspace is how you approach your work environment. This involves where you work, how you work, and how to make the process as easy and safe as possible. As Adam Savage mentions in his excellent book, Every Tool’s a Hammer, improper work holding can not only make tasks difficult but can also lead to ruined work or even injury.
The Importance of a Good Workbench
For me, all work starts on a bench. I need something to hold the subject of my focus, and it needs to meet a lot of conditions. It must be the right height, sturdy enough for prying and hammering, repairable in case of aggressive hammering, inexpensive to allow for ample workspace, and combinable to increase the area for larger projects.
Over the years, I’ve built a lot of benches. Recently, our team developed a design that meets all my criteria and has become a favorite in our workspace. Assembling one of these benches is quick and easy—painting it takes longer than putting it together. While I can’t quote an exact price due to fluctuating wood prices, I can confidently say this bench is cost-effective without sacrificing functionality.

Our Workbench Design
The design minimizes the number of cuts needed. The top is a full sheet of OSB covered with a whiteboard surface, which can be drawn on, cut on, and replaced when worn out. There’s also a full-size shelf underneath for extra storage, keeping items off the floor—a lesson learned the hard way when a leaky seal resulted in damp equipment.
This bench is sturdy, provides ample space, and surpasses most commercial options. While we like small workbenches from Sam’s Club for light tasks like calibration, they aren’t suitable for larger projects or heavy-duty activities like hammering and cutting.
Considerations for Your Workbench
Although I sometimes wish for metal plate tops, such surfaces turn benches into welding tables. Our homemade welding table works great, but it’s generally not ideal to have a conductive work surface when working with electricity. I’ve fried a few PCBs by assuming I’d be careful. Metal tables also create noise when hammering, which can be disruptive. The wooden surface with a whiteboard cover has been useful for sketching ideas, organizing hardware, and even doodling while problem-solving.
